Description

What Are XPE and IXPE Foam?

XPE and IXPE are both cross-linked polyethylene foams based on polyethylene resin.

Cross-linking creates a three-dimensional molecular network within the polyethylene, improving

the foam's mechanical stability, resilience, heat resistance and dimensional stability compared

with conventional non-cross-linked polyethylene foam.

The main difference between XPE and IXPE is the cross-linking technology used during production.

XPE Foam

XPE — Chemically Cross-Linked Polyethylene Foam

XPE is produced using a chemical cross-linking system combined with a controlled foaming process.

The process creates a lightweight, flexible and resilient closed-cell foam structure with good cushioning,

thermal insulation and moisture resistance.XPE offers an excellent balance between performance,

versatility and cost efficiency, making it suitable for a broad range of industrial and commercial applications.

IXPE Foam

IXPE — Electron-Beam Cross-Linked Polyethylene Foam

IXPE uses electron-beam irradiation to create cross-links within the polyethylene structure.

The controlled irradiation process enables the production of a fine and uniform cell structure with

excellent surface quality, dimensional stability and processing characteristics.

IXPE is particularly suitable for applications where customers require higher levels of surface quality,

consistency, cleanliness and precision converting.

Key Performance Features

Fine Closed-Cell Structure

The closed-cell structure provides a combination of lightweight construction, cushioning, insulation and moisture resistance.

The controlled cell structure also contributes to the material's resilience and dimensional stability.

Lightweight

XPE and IXPE provide functional performance with relatively low material weight.

This makes them suitable for applications where weight reduction is important.

Excellent Cushioning and Impact Protection

The elastic foam structure absorbs and dissipates impact energy.

It can be used to protect products, components and surfaces from mechanical impact, vibration and handling damage.

Good Resilience

The cross-linked structure provides good elastic recovery after compression.

This makes XPE and IXPE suitable for cushioning, sealing and repeated compression applications.

Thermal Insulation

The closed-cell foam structure contains numerous small gas-filled cells that help reduce heat transfer.

XPE and IXPE can therefore be used in thermal insulation and temperature-control applications.

Low Water Absorption

The closed-cell structure limits water penetration and provides good resistance to moisture.

This makes the materials suitable for applications in humid environments and areas where moisture resistance is required.

Moisture Resistance

XPE and IXPE provide reliable performance where protection against moisture and condensation is important.

Chemical Resistance

Polyethylene-based foam offers good resistance to many commonly encountered chemicals, oils and other substances.

The actual chemical resistance depends on the specific chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure conditions.

Good Dimensional Stability

Cross-linking improves the structural stability of polyethylene foam under mechanical and environmental conditions.

This is particularly important for insulation, sealing and precision converting applications.

Excellent Surface Quality

IXPE can provide a particularly fine and uniform cell structure and smooth surface.

This makes it suitable for applications requiring good appearance, clean processing and consistent surface characteristics.

Vibration and Noise Reduction

The resilient foam structure can help absorb vibration and reduce mechanical noise in suitable applications.

This makes XPE and IXPE useful in automotive, industrial equipment and building-related applications.

Easy to Convert

XPE and IXPE can be processed into different forms according to application requirements.

Typical converting processes include:

Slitting | Laminating | Adhesive Coating | Embossing | Die Cutting | Shaping | Thermoforming

Choosing Between XPE and IXPE

Choose XPE when:

  • Cost efficiency is an important consideration

  • Good cushioning performance is required

  • Thermal insulation is required

  • Moisture resistance is required

  • The application requires a versatile general-purpose cross-linked PE foam

Choose IXPE when:

  • Fine and uniform cell structure is important

  • Higher surface quality is required

  • Dimensional consistency is important

  • Clean and precise converting is required

  • The application has more demanding performance requirements

The most suitable material depends on the application, processing method, required performance and target cost.

DUTE can assist customers in selecting the appropriate foam structure and processing solution.
